Positron Emission Tomography integrated with Computed Tomography (PET/CT)

PET/CT is a type of medical test that combines two types of imaging (pictures of the body) to provide a more complete picture of what’s going on inside. By doing this, doctors can get a better understanding of certain medical conditions, like cancer, heart disease, or brain disorders, which can be difficult to see with other types of tests. This test is very helpful because it can detect these conditions earlier, pinpoint exactly where they are in the body, and track how well treatments are working. As such, making PET/CT an important tool that doctors use to diagnose and manage certain medical conditions.

Island Hospital utilises advanced imaging technology in the form of the Siemens Biograph mCT, which offers high detection efficiency and resolution detectors comprised of LSO crystals. These crystals enable Time-of-Flight and Ultra-HD image reconstruction algorithms that provide superior image quality and resolution for PET imaging. Our CT capabilities also feature advanced reconstruction algorithms, such as the iMAR and SAFIRE, to produce high-quality images that has less noise and better contrast. Additionally, the wide bore and short tunnel design of the Siemens Biograph mCT ensures patient comfort and a less claustrophobic experience. The current available scan is the F18-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT, which is a valuable tool for the detection and evaluation of certain medical conditions.

PET/CT (FDG) scans are imaging tests that can help doctors detect, diagnose, and monitor certain medical conditions. Some common reasons for having a PET/CT scan include:

Cancer

  • If you have cancer, the scan can help determine the stage and severity of the disease.
  • It can help plan radiation therapy for cancer, especially high dose stereotactic radiation therapy.
  • It can assess and monitor the effectiveness of cancer treatment.
  • If you have already been treated for cancer, it can help detect if the cancer has come back.
  • It can help find the original source of cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  • It can help distinguish between benign and malignant tumors.
  • It can guide a biopsy by identifying the area with the highest metabolic activity.

Heart disease

It can assess the health of the heart.

Neurological disorders

It can help diagnose and monitor certain neurological conditions.

Infections

It can help detect the source of a fever that doctors cannot explain.

This list is not exhaustive and it’s important to note that the decision to have a PET/CT scan will depend on your individual medical history and condition, and should be made in consultation with our doctors.
