Rheumatology is a branch of medicine that deals with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that primarily affect the body’s musculoskeletal system — joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Rheumatic diseases are more than just aches and pains. They can cause the immune system to attack the joints, muscles, bones, and organs.
Early diagnosis and treatment can slow the progression of many rheumatic diseases. Someone should see a rheumatologist if they have chronic joint or musculoskeletal pain that does not disappear or reoccurs after short-term treatment.
