A psychiatrist is trained as a medical doctor and can prescribe medication. A psychologist is not a medical doctor and can’t prescribe medication.

However, both psychologists and psychiatrists are trained to use various forms of therapy to help with your mental health problems.

You should visit a psychiatrist if your condition is severe and has lasted a long time, or if you are thinking about self-harm and suicide.

You can visit a psychologist if you are experiencing anxiety, depression, or stress and feel like you need support to cope.
