Doctors Symposium: Advancing Care Through Deep Brain Stimulation

Island Hospital recently hosted a Doctors Symposium titled “Advancing Care Through Deep Brain Stimulation” on 26 July 2026, in collaboration with the Penang Medical Practitioners’ Society (PMPS) and supported by Ateria Medika.

Bringing together medical professionals from across the region, the symposium offered an opportunity to explore the evolving role of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in the management of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

The programme featured two specialist-led sessions. Dr Lim Thien Thien, Consultant Neurologist and Parkinson & Movement Disorder Specialist, discussed the clinical applications of DBS, including how the treatment may benefit selected patients and potentially improve their quality of life. Dr Lee Hock Keong, Consultant Neurosurgeon, followed with an overview of the surgical considerations and techniques involved in DBS, offering participants a closer look at the neurosurgical approach behind this advanced treatment.

Beyond the presentations, the symposium encouraged meaningful professional dialogue and knowledge exchange, allowing participating doctors to gain deeper insights into the latest developments in DBS and its role in modern patient care.

Island Hospital thanks PMPS, Ateria Medika and all participating doctors for being part of this valuable educational session.
